Sahara Race 2014

There are a few big ‘ultra’ endurance events taking place at the moment, one of them, the Sahara Race 2014, is being held in Jordan-it was meant to be in Egypt originally but was re allocated to Jordan after the political problems still apparent in Egypt. The competitors have to cover 250 kilometres, self supported (food, clothing etc) ¬†over a 7 day period, one of those days actually involves running 80-90 kilometers.

One of the competitors, Mark Roe, who works in Leeds, has been coming to see me for sports massage treatments for several years now. He has been having 1 or 2 treatments per week for the last few weeks of his preparation for the Sahara race event, and 2 years ago I did the same for him as he prepared for the Marathon des Sables in Morocco, another lengthy trek across the desert in blistering heat. Mark has been better prepared this time round compared to 2 years ago and he has been chomping at the bit to get on with the event, which he will have to spend most of the day walking and running through sand dunes etc which is very harsh on the body, and requires a lot more energy than running on solid terrain, but hopefully Mark will take it all in his stride!

I’ll keep you all updated on how Mark gets on in my next newsletter.
